The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has intensified its operation against the growing trend of betting and online gambling in Pakistan, a practice authorities say is rapidly corrupting youth and creating a shadow economy. As part of the crackdown, Areeb Pervaiz, husband of Sistrology star and YouTuber Iqra Kanwal, has been summoned for promoting betting and gambling applications. Notices have also been issued to Iqra Kanwal, who could not appear due to her recent childbirth, and several other influencers accused of endorsing such platforms.
The inquiry, which officially began on August 28, has targeted prominent figures including Rajab Butt, Ins Ali, Saadur Rehman (known as Ducky Bhai), and comedian Nadir Ali. Investigators claim these influencers encouraged gambling by portraying it as entertainment or a quick way to make money, which misled thousands of young followers. Kanwal, through her lawyer, submitted a written statement requesting two months of medical rest before appearing.
Authorities estimate that billions of rupees are being siphoned out of the country every month through these illegal apps, worsening gambling addiction among the youth. The situation has sparked public outrage, with trending hashtags demanding a ban on online betting and stricter penalties for those involved.
