Arab and Islamic leaders are holding an emergency summit in Doha to show solidarity with Qatar after last week’s Israeli strike on Hamas members inside the Gulf state. Hamas confirmed five of its members were killed but said its leadership remained unharmed.
The summit, attended by Arab League and OIC members, began with a foreign ministers’ session on Sunday to draft a joint resolution. Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the gathering was meant to send a clear message that “Qatar is not alone” and enjoys full backing from Arab and Islamic states.
The attack has deepened tensions between Israel and US-aligned Gulf states, particularly the UAE, which normalized ties with Israel in 2020. The UAE summoned Israel’s deputy ambassador, calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks against Qatar hostile.
Qatar, a key mediator in the Gaza conflict, accused Israel of sabotaging peace efforts and engaging in “state terrorism.” Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump criticized the strike, reaffirming Qatar’s role as a vital ally and mediator.
