Muslim Hate In Australia Hits Unprecedented Levels Report

Islamophobia in Australia has reached unprecedented levels, an independent report revealed on Friday. The findings show a sharp rise in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide.

The report, prepared by the government’s special envoy to combat Islamophobia, highlights that many attacks go unreported. This has normalized discrimination against Muslims in several communities.

Aftab Malik, the envoy, said, “Islamophobia in Australia has been persistent, sometimes ignored or denied, but never fully addressed.” He cited examples including public abuse, graffiti, and harassment targeting Muslim women and children.

The 60-page report provides 54 recommendations for the government. Key suggestions include setting up a formal inquiry into religious discrimination and evaluating Islamophobia’s impact on social cohesion and democracy.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his government would carefully consider the report. He emphasized that targeting Australians based on religion violates the nation’s core values. “Australians should feel safe at home in every community. We must eliminate hate, fear, and prejudice,” he said.

The report links the surge in Islamophobia to global events, notably the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel. Since then, recorded hate incidents in Australia have increased by 150%, according to the Islamophobia Register.

Albanese’s administration has also addressed other forms of religious discrimination. Earlier this year, an antisemitism envoy released recommendations to protect Jewish students at universities and screen visa applicants for extremist views.

Officials hope that by implementing the recommendations, Australia can reduce anti-Muslim sentiment, strengthen community safety, and promote social harmony across the country.

The report underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and government action to ensure that all citizens in Australia feel respected and protected, regardless of their faith.
