Nepal's Ex-Chief Justice Expected To Be Named Interim Prime Minister Source

Nepal is likely to appoint former chief justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister, a source close to the talks revealed. The decision follows the resignation of KP Sharma Oli after days of violent anti-graft protests across the country.

The unrest, triggered by a social media ban that was later withdrawn, has been the worst crisis Nepal has faced in years. At least 34 people were killed, and more than 1,300 injured as police tried to control angry demonstrators. The violence eased only after Oli stepped down from office.

According to a constitutional expert involved in consultations, “Sushila Karki will be appointed interim prime minister.” The expert explained that both President Ramchandra Paudel and army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel were part of the discussions. The expert requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

The source also noted that the move is strongly backed by “Gen Z” protesters who led the demonstrations. Their demand for change pushed Karki, Nepal’s Ex-Chief Justice, into the spotlight. The appointment is expected to be announced after a meeting at the president’s residence.

Supporters view Karki, the country’s first female Ex-Chief Justice, as a figure of integrity and accountability. Her leadership, they believe, could help restore public confidence during this critical transition.

The president’s office and the army have not issued official statements yet. However, signs of normal life are returning to Kathmandu. Shops reopened on Friday, vehicles reappeared on the streets, and police shifted from carrying guns to batons. Soldiers still patrol some areas, but their presence has lessened.

Nepal, situated between India and China, has faced repeated political and economic instability since the monarchy was abolished in 2008. Millions of citizens have left to work abroad, sending remittances that remain a vital lifeline for the economy.

If confirmed, the appointment of Ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister could mark a turning point in Nepal’s turbulent political journey.
