Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has sparked international outrage after promising to target Hamas leaders abroad. The remarks come days after a deadly Israeli strike in Qatar’s capital, Doha, which killed senior Hamas officials during ceasefire talks.
The attack drew immediate condemnation from Qatar and other Gulf nations. Despite criticism, Netanyahu warned that countries hosting Hamas officials must act or face consequences. “I say to Qatar and all nations who harbour terrorists, you either expel them or you bring them to justice — because if you don’t, we will,” he stated.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the statement as a “shameful attempt” to justify the attack on its territory. Officials emphasized that Hamas’s office in Doha was part of U.S. and Israeli-mediated peace efforts. They accused Netanyahu of relying on extremist rhetoric while facing international scrutiny, sanctions, and ICC charges.
The Doha strike is part of a recent series of Israeli operations across the Middle East, including Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Tunisia, and the occupied West Bank. On Wednesday alone, at least 35 people were killed in Yemen.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman called the attack “state terror” and said it destroyed any hope for the release of hostages in Gaza. He urged the international community to hold Israel accountable at the ICC.
Diplomatic activity in the Gulf intensified following the strike. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed visited Doha to meet Emir Sheikh Tamim, while leaders from Jordan and Saudi Arabia are expected soon. An Arab-Islamic summit in Doha is planned to coordinate a “collective response” against Israel’s escalation.
