30 Killed, Over 350,000 Affected As Floods Devastate Indian Punjab, North

At least 30 people have lost their lives and more than 350,000 others have been affected as devastating Floods hit India’s Punjab state. Authorities confirmed that all 23 districts of Punjab are now officially declared flood-affected, with nearly 20,000 residents evacuated to safer areas.

Rescue operations are underway with the help of 35 helicopters and 100 boats. Officials have warned that the crisis may intensify, as heavy rainfall is forecast to continue across northern India. So far, 150,000 hectares of crops in Punjab have been destroyed by the Floods, causing severe damage to the region’s agriculture.

The situation is worsening across northern India. In August alone, more than 130 people have died due to heavy rain, landslides, and rising river levels. Villages have been submerged, roads washed away, and vital infrastructure damaged.

Several states, including Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, are among the worst hit. The Chenab and Tawi rivers have crossed danger levels, while flash floods and landslides have cut off many mountain towns from the rest of the country.

In Kashmir’s Rajouri district, a mother and daughter were killed when their home collapsed after heavy rain. In Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, three people died in a landslide, with others trapped under debris.

In Delhi, the Yamuna River has breached the danger mark, forcing the evacuation of nearly 10,000 people. This is the second major crisis in two years, following last year’s severe flooding when the Yamuna rose to a 45-year high.

Punjab’s farmlands remain under threat, with government officials warning that more rainfall could worsen crop damage and trigger food shortages. Relief efforts are being expanded, but worsening weather may complicate rescue and recovery in the days ahead.

The India Meteorological Department has issued fresh warnings of heavy to very heavy rain for Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. Schools have been closed in several regions, and residents have been urged to remain indoors.

Floods continue to disrupt life across northern India, highlighting the urgent need for disaster preparedness and long-term solutions.
