Punjab is facing a severe flood threat as rivers Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi swell due to heavy rains and increased water releases from India. Authorities have issued high flood alerts for many districts in the province.
The floodwaters have already submerged hundreds of villages and displaced over two million people. At Head Trimmu, the Chenab River recorded an extremely high inflow of nearly 479,000 cusecs. Officials expect this number to rise to 700,000 cusecs by evening, increasing the flood risk for downstream areas like Jhang, Multan, and Muzaffargarh.
Authorities have blocked traffic at Head Trimmu as a precaution. Rescue teams, including Rescue 1122 and the Pakistan Army, are actively evacuating residents from affected areas.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has set up over 500 relief camps and more than 350 medical camps across flood-hit zones. More than 17,000 people have received medical treatment, and over 500,000 livestock have been safely relocated.
Unfortunately, the flood has already caused 33 deaths and injured several others. Officials are prepared to use dynamite to breach embankments deliberately. This step aims to divert floodwaters away from densely populated areas to reduce damage.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rain between September 1 and 3, which could worsen the flood situation. Urban flooding is also expected in Lahore, Gujranwala, and Gujrat divisions.
Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, described the ongoing operation as the largest flood relief mission in the province’s history. Authorities continue rescue efforts and have pledged compensation for citizens and farmers who suffer losses.
With the floodwaters rising and rain forecasted, Punjab remains on high alert. Officials urge people in vulnerable areas to stay cautious and cooperate with evacuation orders.
