PM Shehbaz launches energy vehicle policy for clean transport

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the New Energy Vehicle policy, a milestone initiative designed to promote clean transport and reduce Pakistan’s reliance on fossil fuels. The policy focuses on climate resilience, improved urban mobility, and long-term sustainability, while also supporting local manufacturing and investment in the green energy sector.

The launch marks an important moment for Pakistan as it seeks to modernize transport systems and tackle growing environmental concerns. Officials believe the energy vehicle policy will cut fuel import bills, create new jobs, and improve air quality in major cities.

Energy vehicle policy to promote clean transport

The New Energy Vehicle (NEV) policy sets out a framework to support greener mobility options for citizens and businesses. According to government representatives, the NEV strategy will:

  • Boost investment in electric and hybrid vehicle production.
  • Expand infrastructure such as EV charging networks.
  • Provide incentives to make clean transport more affordable.
  • Reduce emissions and support global climate goals.
  • Encourage innovation in renewable energy integration.

This aligns with the government’s wider clean energy roadmap. For example, Karachi is preparing to set up 100 electric vehicle charging stations to improve access for drivers and support the adoption of clean transport across Pakistan.

Climate resilience through clean mobility

Authorities emphasized that the energy vehicle policy will directly support climate resilience by reducing air pollution and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. PM Shehbaz described the launch as “an investment in future generations,” urging both citizens and businesses to support the transition toward clean transport.

Experts welcomed the move but cautioned that long-term success depends on strong regulations, reliable infrastructure, and public awareness. They also noted that Pakistan can learn from international models where clean transport adoption has reduced emissions while boosting innovation and industry growth.

As the policy begins to take shape, the government is calling for collaboration between the public and private sectors to accelerate progress. With the energy vehicle policy now in place, Pakistan is positioning itself for a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.
