Israeli media reported that the navy struck a power plant near Yemen’s capital Sanaa, damaging generators and sparking a fire at the Hezyaz facility, according to Houthi-run Al Masirah TV. Emergency crews managed to contain the blaze and prevent wider destruction, officials said, though residents confirmed hearing multiple explosions.
The Israeli military claimed the site was being used by Houthi forces but provided no evidence, fueling concerns the attack could amount to a war crime. It described the strike as retaliation for repeated Houthi missile and drone launches towards Israel.
Since 2023, Houthis have targeted Israel in response to its war in Gaza, while Israel has bombed key Yemeni infrastructure including Hodeidah port and the international airport, disrupting aid and civilian services.
The conflict has drawn in global powers, with the US and UK also bombing Houthi sites after attacks on Israel-linked vessels in the Red Sea. Earlier this year, Washington struck a truce with the Houthis to end hostilities against US assets, though the group said its operations against Israel would continue.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has vowed Israel will act independently if allies step back.
