Heavy rain and flash flooding have caused severe damage across Tennessee, leading to multiple fatalities and widespread disruption. Officials confirmed that at least four people have died due to the intense weather conditions. The flooding has submerged roads, blocked highways, and forced emergency rescues throughout the state.
In East Ridge, a suburb of Chattanooga, a tragic incident occurred when a large tree, uprooted by waterlogged soil, fell on a family’s home. This accident resulted in the deaths of three family members shortly after midnight, as reported by Hamilton County Emergency Management spokesperson Amy Maxwell.
Authorities are also searching for a man swept away by floodwaters after he bypassed firefighters and road barricades. A fourth body was recovered during the search, as confirmed by the Chattanooga Fire Department.
The sudden flooding caught officials off guard due to its rapid onset and severity. At one point, over 60 vehicles became stranded on a flooded interstate, forcing first responders to carry people on their backs to safety along the highway divider.
Chattanooga’s airport recorded over 16 centimeters of rain on Tuesday, marking the city’s second-wettest day since records began in 1879. Interstate 24 experienced temporary closures, and many homes and vehicles were flooded.
The US National Weather Service issued flood watches for six million people in Tennessee and surrounding areas through Wednesday night. Officials warned of more heavy rains and flash floods that could impact already saturated regions.
Scientists have linked the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events in Tennessee and across the US to climate change, which is driven by fossil fuel pollution. Last month alone, more than 3,600 flash flood warnings were issued nationwide, nearly reaching the annual average.
