FBR Gets Access to Your Calls and Online Activity for Tax Audits

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has been given extensive new powers to track citizens’ internet usage and phone records as part of efforts to combat tax evasion.

Under the updated law, telecom firms, internet service providers, and the PTA must provide customer data on request, including subscriber details, call logs, technical usage records, and import/export information tied to investigations. Authorities say these steps will help trace hidden financial transactions and curb tax fraud.

The legislation also enables FBR to hire private auditors and technical experts to assist in probes, with all personnel bound by strict confidentiality. While officials emphasize the data will only be used for lawful purposes, privacy concerns remain. They warn that any unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information will lead to severe legal action, adding that the expanded powers aim to enhance enforcement while respecting citizens’ privacy.
