National Minorities Day Marked With Promises Of Equality And Safety

Pakistan observed Minorities Day on August 11, with national leaders reaffirming their commitment to the rights and protection of religious minorities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that protecting the rights of minorities is both a constitutional duty and a religious obligation. He recalled the historic speech of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on August 11, 1947, calling it a strong foundation for equal citizenship. The Prime Minister also paid tribute to members of minority communities who sacrificed their lives for the country.

President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized that minorities have equal rights under the Constitution of Pakistan. He said the country has taken important steps for their welfare since Minorities Day was officially declared in 2009. He also promised continued efforts to promote interfaith harmony.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi noted that Pakistan was created on Islamic principles such as justice, equality, and tolerance. He stressed that the safety of minorities, their religious sites, and their inclusion in society remain key government priorities.

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani acknowledged the contributions of minorities to national development. He said the upper house will continue to protect their rights through legislation and oversight.

Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Sherry Rehman reminded the public that President Zardari introduced Minorities Day in 2009 to officially recognize their role in Pakistan’s progress. She said both the state and society must share the responsibility of protecting minority rights.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised minorities as the “beauty and crown” of Pakistani society. She highlighted initiatives such as the Minority Card scheme, recognition of Sikh and Hindu marriage laws, and funding for religious festivals and scholarships.

Minorities Day is celebrated annually to honor the role of non-Muslim citizens and to reaffirm their constitutional rights in a diverse and inclusive Pakistan.
