Authorities in Rawalpindi have imposed Section 144 from August 4 to 10, prohibiting all public gatherings, rallies, and pillion riding due to security concerns linked to PTI’s protest on August 5.
A notification from the Deputy Commissioner’s office confirmed a complete ban on political activities, display of arms, and use of loudspeakers in public spaces. The public is also warned against removing official roadblocks, with violations resulting in legal action.
In anticipation, Rawalpindi police have been instructed to remain on high alert. CPO Khalid Hamdani has directed the Special Branch and all units to stay at assigned posts with full attendance ensured through a formal SP Security memo. Round-the-clock presence has been ordered to respond quickly to any emergencies.
Meanwhile, Islamabad authorities have also enforced Section 144 and warned that individuals participating in unauthorized gatherings will face immediate arrest. Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon emphasized that strict legal action would be taken against violators and urged citizens to avoid unlawful activities.
PTI, which plans to stage a protest for the release of its jailed leaders and restoration of rule of law, is facing intensified police pressure. Multiple leaders have reportedly gone underground, alleging raids and harassment. Workers claim they are being forced to sign pledges to stay away from protests, while reports of frozen bank accounts of party officials have surfaced.
The party appears to be struggling with internal divisions, as differing views on protest strategies continue to emerge publicly.
