BYD Introduces Pakistan’s First Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Truck ‘Shark 6’

Chinese automotive giant BYD has launched Pakistan’s first plug-in hybrid electric pickup truck, named the Shark 6. The launch event took place in Karachi, showcasing BYD’s latest innovation in hybrid technology.

The Shark 6 is priced at Rs19.95 crore and is designed to offer an eco-friendly alternative for both urban and commercial users. BYD officials say this model represents a major advancement in sustainable transportation in Pakistan.

Danish Khaliq, Vice President of Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, explained that the Shark 6 is not just a regular hybrid. The electric motor carries most of the driving load, while the gasoline engine supports it when needed. This setup aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

The vehicle features a 1.5-liter high-efficiency engine combined with a large battery pack. This allows the pickup truck to run in full electric mode during daily city drives and use the engine for longer journeys, offering flexibility and better mileage.

Li Jian, Country Head of BYD Pakistan, highlighted that the Shark 6 introduces a new vehicle category to the Pakistani market. BYD has over 20 years of experience developing dual-mode technology and first launched a commercial plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2008.

BYD’s entry into Pakistan’s automotive sector is expected to promote cleaner transport options amid rising fuel costs and environmental concerns. The company believes the Shark 6 will encourage wider adoption of hybrid vehicles in the country.

Although no specific timeline for mass availability was given, BYD confirmed that the Shark 6 launch is part of a larger strategy to expand hybrid and electric vehicle technology across South Asia.

Founded in 1995, BYD is a global leader in electric and hybrid vehicles, with strong markets in China, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
