Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar addressed the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, reaffirming Pakistan’s firm commitment to the 2030 Agenda. He highlighted major national efforts to promote socio-economic development and climate resilience.

In his statement, Dar outlined Pakistan’s key policy steps aimed at inclusive economic growth, climate adaptation, and structural reform, especially in the face of global challenges like food insecurity and climate change. “The food crisis and climate change are urgent global concerns,” he noted, mentioning “Uraan Pakistan” — a youth-focused initiative fostering innovation and empowerment.

He emphasized several key programs:

  • Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP): A cornerstone of Pakistan’s social safety net, offering support to underprivileged populations.
  • Living Indus & Recharge Pakistan: Projects promoting climate sustainability and renewable energy.
  • Digital Youth Initiatives: Programs to equip young people with digital skills and increase access to jobs and education.
  • Daanish Schools: Educational institutions for disadvantaged children to ensure equitable access to quality learning.

Dar also underlined the importance of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in drawing foreign direct investment aligned with sustainable development goals.

Calling for a transformation in the global financial system, Dar urged the international community to make financial structures fairer and more supportive of developing nations. “The Global South needs a system that is just, inclusive, and development-oriented,” he said.

While in New York on a week-long visit, Dar is scheduled to:

  • Meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN General Assembly president.
  • Attend the signing of the Convention on Marine Biological Diversity.
  • Lead sessions of the UN Security Council.

His visit underscores Pakistan’s proactive role in promoting sustainable development and its engagement in key global environmental and economic discussions
