The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new chipless National Identity Card. The new card uses a secure QR code instead of an imported microchip.
The new identity card has been produced in Pakistan by the National Security Printing Company (NSPC) in Karachi. Its design follows the technical and security requirements set by NADRA.
The move aims to reduce reliance on foreign-made technology. It also provides a simpler way to verify identity through digital systems.
The federal government approved the new card on February 23, 2026. The QR code can be scanned and verified using a smartphone.
Verification will be available through the Pak Identity (PakID) mobile application. The system will allow authorized users to access relevant identity information securely.
The QR code will contain important details about the cardholder. It will also include the cardholder’s photograph.
This feature can help organizations enter identity details into computerized systems. It may also reduce mistakes during manual data entry.
The new card includes several additional details and symbols. These include the family number and specific symbols for different categories.
Symbols will identify persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and organ donors. The card will also identify citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The cardholder’s name and address will be printed in both Urdu and English. NADRA has also updated the card’s visible and hidden security features.
These changes are designed to meet current security requirements. They also support local production and manufacturing capabilities.
The previous chip-based Smart National Identity Card was introduced around 14 years ago. However, its chip features faced practical limitations.
Many institutions did not have the required chip readers and supporting systems. This limited the practical use of chip-based verification.
The new QR-based system aims to address this issue. It can work with an ordinary smartphone camera and suitable verification software.
Telecom companies, banks, hospitals, Pakistan Railways, police, and other authorized organizations will receive verification software.
This software will allow institutions to scan and authenticate the QR code. It could make identity verification faster and more accessible.
NADRA will introduce the new card in different phases. The first phase begins on August 14, 2026.
During this phase, the QR-based card will replace the standard National Identity Card. Other identity card categories will follow later.
From January 2027, the new format will expand to other national identity documents. These will include NICOP and Juvenile Cards.
In the final phase, the Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will also shift to the new format.
The transition represents a major change in Pakistan’s national identity system. It replaces chip-based technology with smartphone-friendly QR verification.
