Tensions Escalate as Israel Strikes Houthis in Yemen Amid Ongoing Regional Conflict

Tensions in the Red Sea region intensified as Israel launched multiple airstrikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah port city, targeting Houthi installations. The strikes followed the launch of two missiles from Yemen, which the Israeli military attempted to intercept. The outcome of the interceptions remains under review, and no casualties or impacts have been reported by Israeli emergency services.

Since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement has increasingly targeted Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, claiming support for Palestinians. Although most of the missiles and drones fired at Israel have either been intercepted or failed to reach their targets, the persistent attacks have disrupted global shipping routes and triggered a series of retaliatory Israeli strikes.

One notable target of the latest Israeli attack was the Galaxy Leader vessel at Ras Isa port, previously seized by the Houthis in late 2023. According to the Israeli military, the group had mounted a radar system on the ship to monitor maritime traffic, posing a threat to international navigation. Houthi forces reportedly responded to the Israeli strikes using a significant number of surface-to-air missiles.

Residents reported widespread power outages in Hodeidah after the airstrikes damaged the city’s main power station. While there were no immediate reports of casualties, the strikes came just hours after a ship near Hodeidah was attacked and abandoned by its crew. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the ship attack, security analysts say the target fits the typical profile of a Houthi operation.
