Chaos at Karachi’s Malir Jail Sparks Mass Prisoner Escape

A dramatic escape unfolded at Karachi’s District Jail Malir, also known as “Bacha Jail,” on Monday night, when 216 prisoners fled amid chaos caused by a series of tremors shaking the city. Many inmates were already outside their barracks as the tremors hit, and they took advantage of the confusion to overpower jail staff, leading to a violent confrontation.

Heavy gunfire was reported both inside the prison and in the surrounding areas, causing panic among nearby residents. Authorities temporarily closed key routes, including the National Highway, while police and Rangers swiftly cordoned off the area to contain the situation.

SSP Malir Kashif Aftab Abbasi confirmed that a large police and paramilitary presence arrived within minutes to control the unrest and prevent further escapes. Mosques across Malir broadcast announcements asking the public to assist in capturing the fugitives.

Officials described the prison as having turned into a “battlefield,” with over 600 prisoners from Circles No. 4 and 5 outside their cells due to routine jail procedures when the tremors hit, sparking a riot-like scenario. Senior security officials have since reviewed the situation and are taking measures to restore order.
