Tom Cruise Eyes New Frontiers After Mission Impossible Farewell

Tom Cruise is preparing to close a major chapter in his career with Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning, but the 61-year-old Hollywood icon is far from ready to step out of the spotlight. At the New York premiere of the franchise’s eighth and final instalment, Cruise confirmed the curtain is coming down on his nearly 30-year run as IMF agent Ethan Hunt.

“It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing,” Cruise said at AMC Lincoln Square, reaffirming that this film will be the series’ conclusion. The film follows critically praised showings in Cannes and London, where it was met with a warm reception for its high-stakes action and ensemble cast.

Despite wrapping up the franchise, Cruise made it abundantly clear he has no intention of slowing down. “I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s,” he declared. Inspired by industry veterans like Harrison Ford, Cruise plans to continue exploring roles across genres, from drama to comedy—and even musicals.

In a separate event at the British Film Institute, Cruise shared that musical films are still on his to-do list. “Definitely musicals,” he said, when asked about roles he hasn’t yet tackled. That statement hints at a possible new direction for the action star, who’s long been known for redefining physical and genre limits.

With Final Reckoning set to hit theaters globally on May 23 and featuring a powerhouse cast including Hayley Atwell and Simon Pegg, Cruise may be saying goodbye to Ethan Hunt—but he’s far from saying goodbye to cinema.
