Pakistan’s National CERT Warns of Heightened Cyberattack Risks Amid Rising Tensions with India
In the wake of escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, the National Computer Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued a high-priority advisory, highlighting a significant increase in the risk of cyberattacks targeting Pakistan’s critical infrastructure and government institutions.
Geopolitical Instability Heightens Cyber Threats
According to the advisory, the ongoing geopolitical instability in South Asia and Central Asia has created an environment ripe for sophisticated cyberattacks. Potential targets include government departments, defence installations, financial institutions, and media organizations. The advisory warns that attackers may attempt to exploit this instability by deploying advanced tactics such as spear-phishing, malware infections, and deepfake technology to breach systems, steal sensitive data, and disrupt essential services.

Serious Risks to Critical Infrastructure and Data Security
“The likelihood of strategic infrastructure disruptions, alongside an increase in data theft and financial losses, is substantial,” the advisory cautions. The National CERT has stressed the need for heightened cyber vigilance and preparedness, calling for immediate action across all sectors. Institutions have been urged to strengthen their cybersecurity protocols, conduct security audits, and update antivirus and security software to safeguard against potential threats.

The director general of National CERT underscored that successful cyberattacks could have far-reaching consequences, leading to political instability and eroding public trust in key institutions. “In today’s world, cybersecurity is intrinsically linked to national security,” the DG emphasized. “Urgent, strategic measures must be implemented to protect Pakistan’s national interests.”
Financial Systems at High Risk
The advisory also raised alarms over the heightened risk to Pakistan’s banking and financial systems, with cybercriminals potentially targeting vulnerabilities to cause substantial financial damage.
Public Urged to Maintain Strong Cyber Hygiene
The public has been urged to practice strict cyber hygiene, be vigilant against phishing attempts, and ensure that all digital platforms are properly secured to minimize the risk of falling victim to cyberattacks.
