Australian Cricketer Michael Slater Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Domestic Violence Charges

Former Aussie Cricketer Michael Slater Sentenced to Four Years, Released After Serving Over a Year

SYDNEY – Former Australian Test cricketer Michael Slater has been handed a four-year partially suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple domestic violence offences. Having already spent more than a year in custody following a denied bail application in April 2024, Slater will now be released under court-mandated conditions.

A partially suspended sentence means that while the total sentence is four years, part of it will not be served in custody, provided the convict meets specific conditions during their release period.

Slater, who represented Australia in 74 Test matches, was convicted on seven charges, including two counts of choking a woman and sending her offensive and threatening messages.

Judge Glenn Cash, delivering the verdict, highlighted Slater’s long-standing battle with alcohol addiction, calling it a deep-rooted issue that has severely impacted his behaviour and life choices.

In a dramatic scene in April 2024, Slater collapsed in court when a Queensland judge denied his bail, requiring officers to assist him. He has been held behind bars ever since.

The ruling concludes a high-profile case that drew significant attention due to Slater’s former status as a cricketing star and media commentator. The court’s decision to release him now hinges on his compliance with rehabilitation and behavioural conditions moving forward.
