The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to appoint former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson as the new head coach of the national men’s cricket team, according to media reports. His formal appointment is expected following the conclusion of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10.
Hesson, currently coaching Islamabad United in PSL 10, has emerged as the frontrunner for the role. With a strong resume, including his time as New Zealand’s head coach and Director of Cricket for IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, Hesson fits the PCB’s criteria for the post, which required a Level 3 certification and over a decade of coaching experience.

The coaching position has been vacant since Gary Kirsten stepped down. Aaqib Javed served as interim coach until February 2025 but has declined to continue. Hesson’s successful run with Islamabad United in PSL 9 is believed to have further strengthened his case.
While former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is also reportedly in the running, insiders suggest Hesson is the PCB’s preferred choice to lead Pakistan’s coaching setup ahead of a crucial international season.
