Former Pakistan pacer Umar Gul has been appointed as Bangladesh’s new bowling coach for their upcoming T20I tour of Pakistan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed. Gul, 42, will begin his tenure with the national team during the five-match T20I series in May. The short-term contract has been initially set for three months, with the potential for an extension through the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, depending on mutual satisfaction.
Gul expressed excitement about the role, noting that while final terms are still being discussed, he is eager to take on the challenge. The former fast bowler, known for his crucial role in Pakistan’s 2009 T20 World Cup victory, brings invaluable experience to Bangladesh’s bowling department. Over his career, Gul took 163 wickets in Tests, 179 in ODIs, and 85 in T20Is.

With Bangladesh’s fast-bowling roster including the likes of Naheed Rana, Hasan Mahmud, and Mustafizur Rahman, Gul’s expertise is expected to aid in their development as they prepare for major tournaments such as the Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026. Gul’s coaching career also includes stints with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The series, which was initially scheduled to feature three ODIs and three T20Is, will now consist of five T20Is as both cricket boards adjusted the format to align with upcoming white-ball competitions. The exact dates and venues for the series are yet to be announced.
