The measles outbreak in Sindh has intensified, claiming the lives of 17 children and infecting over 1,100 others within two months.

According to the Health Department, between January 1 and March 8, more than 1,100 children contracted measles, with 17 fatalities reported. Karachi recorded 550 cases, while 10 children died in Khairpur, five in District East, and one each in Sukkur and Jacobabad.

Medical professionals emphasize that measles is a highly contagious viral illness, characterized by fever, cough, eye inflammation, and red rashes. Unvaccinated children face severe risks, including pneumonia, brain inflammation, and other life-threatening complications.

The World Health Organization highlights pneumonia as the leading cause of measles-related deaths. The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) offers free measles vaccines at nine and 15 months of age, ensuring full protection against the virus.
