Move Over ChatGPT – Google’s New ‘Canvas’ Feature Redefines the Future of AI-Powered Coding

Google Enhances Gemini AI with Canvas and Audio Overview Features

Google has expanded the capabilities of its AI-powered chatbot, Gemini, by introducing two new features: Canvas and Audio Overview. These tools aim to enhance user experience in coding, writing, and content consumption.

Canvas: A New Interactive Coding and Writing Tool

Canvas, now available for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers, serves as an interactive workspace for coding and writing projects. The tool enables users to:

  • Generate, refine, and share content seamlessly within the Gemini app on both web and mobile platforms.
  • Fine-tune text by adjusting tone, length, and formatting using simple prompts.
  • Collaborate in real time, with the ability to export content directly to Google Docs.
  • Preview and modify HTML/React code and web app prototypes, allowing developers to test input fields, call-to-action buttons, and other UI elements before deployment.

Google claims Canvas streamlines coding by reducing the need to switch between multiple applications, benefiting both beginners and experienced developers.

Audio Overview: AI-Powered Summarisation

The Audio Overview feature enhances Google’s NotebookLM, transforming written materials into AI-generated podcast-style discussions. Users can:

  • Upload documents via the Gemini prompt bar to generate audio summaries.
  • Download or share these AI-generated discussions.
  • Process information more efficiently, including class notes, research papers, email threads, and reports.

Currently, Audio Overview supports various file formats but is limited to English. Google has announced plans to expand language support in the near future.

Google’s AI Expansion Amid Rising Competition

These updates follow OpenAI’s launch of its ‘Canvas’ tool for ChatGPT in October 2024, highlighting the ongoing competition among AI giants. Google’s latest innovations reflect a broader industry trend of rapid AI advancements aimed at enhancing productivity, collaboration, and learning experiences.
