Mohammad Amir Eyes 2026 IPL Entry Through UK Citizenship
Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has sparked major discussion in the cricketing world by announcing his intention to play in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). His revelation has generated both excitement and debate, as it could mark the return of a Pakistani-born cricketer to the IPL after more than a decade.
Amir’s IPL Ambitions & Citizenship Plan
Speaking on a television show, Amir confirmed his plans to enter the 2026 IPL auction, expressing eagerness to participate.
“By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, why not? I will play in the IPL,” Amir stated.

His eligibility, however, depends on a crucial factor: his application for UK citizenship. Currently residing in the United Kingdom, where his wife, Narjis, holds British citizenship, Amir expects to receive his British passport by late 2025. Once he secures UK nationality, he will no longer be classified as a Pakistani player under IPL regulations, allowing him to enter the auction as an overseas cricketer.
A Strategy with Precedent
Amir’s approach is not without precedent. In 2011, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood acquired British citizenship, which allowed him to participate in the IPL despite the BCCI’s ban on Pakistani players. Mahmood played for Kings XI Punjab (2012-2013) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2015) as an overseas player. Amir appears to be following a similar pathway, potentially setting a precedent for other Pakistani-born cricketers seeking IPL opportunities.
A Major Career Milestone
If Amir’s plan materializes, it would be a significant moment in his career. The IPL is considered the most lucrative and competitive T20 league globally, providing a high-profile platform for players. At 31 years old, Amir’s inclusion could further establish his T20 credentials and add a new dimension to his post-Pakistan career.
As Amir awaits his UK citizenship, the cricketing world will be closely watching whether his strategy succeeds and whether it opens doors for other Pakistani-born cricketers in the IPL. For now, his British passport application remains the key to unlocking this potential new chapter in his career.
