Sindh is currently grappling with a severe water crisis as the Irrigation Department has issued an urgent warning that key dams may run completely dry within the next few days. Official documents reveal that both the Mangla and Tarbela dams are expected to deplete in just 4 to 5 days, posing a serious threat to the province.

The impact of the drought is already evident in cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana. According to a circular from the department, the scant rainfall during the current Rabi season (2024-25) has driven water reserves to dangerously low levels. As of March 3, 2025, Tarbela Dam holds only 0.102 million acre-feet of water, and Mangla Dam has just 0.226 million acre-feet remaining.
The document warns that water shortages could exceed 50% for the remainder of March and into the next season, severely affecting both agriculture and drinking water supplies. In response, authorities have called for a systematic plan to ensure the equitable distribution of the limited water available, and they hinted that rationing measures may soon be implemented to manage the crisis.
