Wrestling Legend Buvaisar Saitiev Passes Away at 49

Three-time Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Buvaisar Saitiev has passed away at the age of 49, as confirmed by Russian sports officials. The unexpected news has shocked the global wrestling community and beyond.

Mikhail Mamiashvili, President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (RWF), expressed disbelief, saying, “They called me just ten minutes ago to inform me of this tragedy. It’s hard to believe. We were supposed to fly together tomorrow.”

Saitiev, considered one of the greatest freestyle wrestlers of all time, won Olympic gold in the 74 kg category at the 1996, 2004, and 2008 Games. His illustrious career also included six world and European championships. His contributions to Russian sport earned him multiple national honors, including the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, the Order of Honor, and the Order of Friendship.

After retiring in 2009, Saitiev transitioned into politics, serving as a member of the State Duma, where his influence continued to shape Russia’s sporting landscape.

Tributes poured in from across the combat sports world, with Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo calling Saitiev a “hero” and “legend” on social media. MMA star Khabib Nurmagomedov shared a picture with Saitiev, writing, “You inspired millions of children around the world and we will miss you.” UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev also expressed his condolences, calling him a “legend.”

Saitiev’s legacy in freestyle wrestling remains unmatched, and his passing leaves an indelible mark on the sport.
