Federal Minister Proposes Toll Tax on Tourists Visiting Gilgit-Baltistan for Infrastructure Development
Federal Minister for Privatization, Board of Investment, and Communications, Aleem Khan, has proposed introducing a toll tax on tourists traveling to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to fund infrastructure development in the region.
The proposal was discussed in a meeting held in Islamabad with Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, where they reviewed the National Highway Authority’s (NHA) role in expanding the region’s transport network.

Road Safety & Infrastructure Plans
Aleem Khan highlighted that a Rs. 15 billion feasibility study had been submitted to the Planning Commission to improve safety on the Jaglot-Skardu Road. The study identifies nine critical areas requiring urgent enhancements, and he assured that the proposal’s approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) would be fast-tracked.
Additionally, he addressed long-standing compensation issues related to the Karakoram Highway expansion project, pledging to take the necessary steps to resolve them.
Toll Tax Proposal & Exemptions
Emphasizing Gilgit-Baltistan’s growing importance as a tourist destination, Aleem Khan explained that toll tax revenue would be used to maintain and develop road infrastructure. However, he clarified that local residents would be exempt from this tax.

Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan welcomed the initiative, expressing his full support for collaborative efforts aimed at boosting infrastructure and enhancing the region’s tourism potential.
