LHC Approves Aurat March in Lahore for February 12

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has officially granted permission for the Aurat March to take place in the city on February 12, resolving a legal dispute over the demonstration. The annual event, which celebrates women’s rights and raises awareness on issues related to gender equality, was initially met with resistance from local authorities. However, the court’s decision has cleared the way for it to proceed as scheduled.

The controversy began when the Lahore Deputy Commissioner (DC) denied permission for the march, citing security and logistical concerns. In response, the organizers, including activists Leena Ghani, Neelum Hussain, Fatima Jan, and Shireen Umair, filed a contempt of court petition, accusing authorities of delaying approvals and failing to honor a 2023 court ruling. The petition was heard by Justice Anwaar Hussain, who presided over the case on Thursday.

During the proceedings, the DC presented a report from the Punjab government confirming that permission for the march had been granted. The report also outlined the security measures to be implemented to ensure the safety of participants. The court subsequently dismissed the contempt petition and directed authorities to provide “foolproof security” for the event.

The march, which will start from the Lahore Press Club at Shimla Paharri and end at Egerton Road, aims to honor the legacy of the 1983 protest against discriminatory laws. The event will feature speeches, performances, and other activities to raise awareness about gender inequality, violence against women, and other critical issues.

With the court’s approval and enhanced security measures, the Aurat March in Lahore on February 12 is set to proceed, marking another significant chapter in Pakistan’s ongoing fight for women’s rights.
