OpenAI introduced a new AI tool called “deep research” on Sunday, designed to conduct multi-step internet research for complex tasks.
Powered by a version of OpenAI’s upcoming o3 model optimized for web browsing and data analysis, deep research enables ChatGPT to find, analyze, and synthesize multiple online sources—including text, images, and PDFs—to generate detailed reports at a research analyst level.

“This tool accomplishes in minutes what would take a human several hours,” OpenAI stated.
However, OpenAI acknowledged that deep research is still in its early stages and has certain limitations. “It may struggle to differentiate authoritative sources from rumors and often fails to accurately convey uncertainty,” the company noted.
The tool is currently available on the web version of ChatGPT and will be rolled out to mobile and desktop apps later in February.
Deep research marks OpenAI’s second AI agent release this year, following the January preview of Operator, a tool designed to handle various tasks, such as creating to-do lists and assisting with vacation planning.
