Lahore Traffic Police Enforces Mandatory Helmet Law for All Motorcyclists
The Lahore Traffic Police has introduced a new regulation mandating that all individuals riding motorcycles—drivers and passengers alike, regardless of gender—must wear helmets.
This directive, issued by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed, is part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety and minimize fatalities caused by head injuries in traffic accidents.

Grace Period for Compliance
To facilitate the transition, a one-week grace period has been provided to female riders, after which strict penalties, including challans (fines), will be imposed on violators.
“Motorcycle riders, especially online bike riders, often see purchasing a second helmet as a financial burden. However, this step is essential for saving lives,” CTO Waheed stated.
Motorcycles Dominate Lahore’s Roads
Traffic authorities report that Lahore has over eight million registered vehicles, with motorcycles comprising 53% of this total. Given this significant number, ensuring helmet usage is a priority for reducing road accidents and fatalities.
Impact of Helmet Usage on Safety
Helmet use has already demonstrated a measurable impact on road safety, reducing the death rate in motorcycle accidents by 26%, according to officials. The Lahore Traffic Police is hopeful that this initiative will further lower fatalities caused by head injuries by at least half.
Focus on Online Bike Riders and Delivery Personnel
The regulation also targets promoting safer practices among the growing number of online bike riders and delivery personnel in the city, who are constantly on the move.
This proactive measure by the Lahore Traffic Police underscores the importance of road safety and the need for strict compliance to protect lives on the city’s busy streets.
