A large public jirga convened in Murree to oppose the Punjab government’s contentious “Murree Development Plan.” Held in Lower Topa, the event was attended by political leaders, business representatives, and residents. Prominent figures such as former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and ex-MNA Sadaqat Abbasi strongly criticized the plan and called for a complete market closure in Murree on December 27 as a mark of protest.
Political parties, including PTI, PPP, JI, and JUI, joined the jirga, while PML-N boycotted the event. Key issues discussed were the remodeling of Jheeka Gali Chowk, restrictions on Mall Road under Section 4, and operations along the Expressway. Businesses on Mall Road and Jheeka Gali remained shut in solidarity with the protest. Despite the imposition of Section 144 to maintain order, the event proceeded peacefully.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi condemned the government’s approach, urging it to involve locals in decisions and reconsider actions that disrupt livelihoods. He noted that in decades of political activity, he had never seen Section 144 enforced in Murree. Abbasi emphasized the power of collective public action and called for dialogue with the community.
Protesters pledged to resist the development plan until the government engages with stakeholders transparently and addresses their concerns. The December 27 shutdown represents an escalation in opposition to the proposed initiatives.
