The Punjab government has announced the reopening of schools in Lahore and Multan starting tomorrow, November 20, following a period of closure due to hazardous air quality levels. This decision comes after significant improvements in air quality, attributed to recent rainfall in the upper regions of Punjab.
To ensure the health and safety of students and staff, the following precautions have been put in place:
- School timings: Schools will not open before 8:45 am.
- Mask mandate: All students and teachers must wear masks throughout the school day.
- Outdoor activities ban: All outdoor sports and co-curricular activities will be suspended until further notice.

The Environment Department has issued a notification directing schools to strictly follow these guidelines to minimize the impact of smog and air pollution.
Earlier this week, the Punjab government decided to reopen schools across the province, except in Lahore and Multan, after air quality improved in most districts. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb highlighted the importance of children’s education but emphasized that their health could not be compromised. She also commended the public for their cooperation in helping address the severe smog issue.
Environmental experts noted that recent rainfall has played a key role in improving air quality, leading to a significant reduction in pollution levels across many districts.
