Gym Weights May Harbor 362 Times More Bacteria Than Toilet Seats

A recent study has revealed alarming levels of harmful bacteria on gym equipment, presenting potential health risks for gym-goers. Researchers from FitRated analyzed samples from 27 gym machines and found over a million germs per square inch on each piece of equipment.

Among the bacteria discovered were gram-positive cocci, which can cause skin infections, and antibiotic-resistant gram-negative rods, posing significant health concerns. The study showed that free weights harbored 362 times more germs than a toilet seat, and treadmills contained 74 times more bacteria than a public bathroom faucet.

Bacteria thrive on gym equipment due to frequent use by multiple individuals, and many gym-goers neglect to disinfect machines before and after use. Experts advise disinfecting gym equipment, practicing good hygiene, avoiding face-touching, and washing hands thoroughly after workouts. To further reduce risks, changing out of gym clothes immediately after exercise is also recommended.
