Researchers in Denmark have created a new drug that replicates the effects and advantages of intense exercise without any physical activity.

The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, suggests the drug delivers the same health benefits as running long distances at a fast pace.

Named LaKe, the drug has been shown in lab rats to remove toxins and improve heart function.

“We’ve developed a molecule that mimics the body’s natural metabolic response to strenuous exercise and fasting,” said Dr. Thomas Poulsen, a chemist at Aarhus University. “In effect, it puts the body in a state similar to running 10 kilometers at high speed on an empty stomach.”
