Macklemore has canceled his upcoming Dubai concert scheduled for October in protest against the United Arab Emirates’ involvement in the Sudan humanitarian crisis.
In an Instagram statement, Macklemore explained his decision, citing the severe impact of the crisis in Sudan, where over 10 million people are displaced, millions face imminent famine, and widespread sexual violence has led to at least 150,000 deaths, including many children. He also highlighted the UAE’s significant role in funding the RSF militia, which is a major contributor to the crisis.

The rapper’s choice follows his release of the pro-Palestine protest song “Hind’s Hall” earlier this year. Macklemore emphasized the moral reasons behind his decision, acknowledging that it might affect future opportunities in the region. He stated, “I don’t take this decision lightly and think it’s important to explain why.” He added, “Until the UAE stops arming and funding the RSF, I will not perform there.”
His move has ignited a wider discussion about artists’ roles in addressing global conflicts. Macklemore has encouraged his peers to use their platforms to advocate for urgent humanitarian issues that may otherwise be overlooked.
While the UAE has denied allegations of supplying weapons to the RSF, the claim is widely considered an “open secret.” The situation remains critical, with recent US-led mediation efforts revealing that the Sudanese army’s absence from aid discussions is impeding progress.
