PDMA issues flood warning for the mighty river as monsoon's heavy rains continue

The Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported widespread flooding across 34 locations in Mianwali, Leh, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur. The PDMA has deployed 24 boats and 78 rescue workers to assist in ongoing rescue operations, and 36 relief camps have been established to support those affected by the floods.

According to PDMA’s Director General, Irfan Kathia, 930 individuals have been safely relocated, and 1,572 people have received medical treatment in 33 mobile medical camps set up in the impacted areas. In addition to human rescues, 757 cattle have been moved to safer areas, and 42,714 animals have been vaccinated to prevent disease outbreaks. Kathia highlighted that the timely response of the PDMA and local administration has prevented any loss of life or property, despite the flooding affecting 785 houses and 49,212 acres of land.

The situation in the Indus River remains critical, with water levels rising to 428,000 cusecs, leading to a medium flood in the Kot Addu region. Severe erosion has been reported, causing the river to change its course. A red alert has been issued in the low-lying village of Khulling, where over a hundred houses are at risk of flooding. More than 700 residents have already been evacuated, and district administrations, including the irrigation department, are on-site, working to prevent further erosion by placing stones along the riverbanks. Deputy Commissioner Syed Manwar Abbas Bukhari has ordered the immediate relocation of affected individuals to relief camps. The PDMA warns that the flood conditions in the Indus River may persist for the next few days due to ongoing monsoon rains.
