Ex-England Batsman Thorpe Passes Away at 55

Former England batsman and coach Graham Thorpe has passed away at the age of 55, as announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Thorpe, a distinguished cricketer, earned 100 Test caps between 1993 and 2005 and scored 16 centuries during his impressive career. He accumulated 6,744 Test runs at an average of 44.66 and also featured in 82 one-day internationals.

Thorpe enjoyed a significant 17-year stint with Surrey and transitioned into coaching after retiring from playing in 2005. He contributed to the England international teams in various coaching roles from 2010 to 2022, helping guide many of England’s top talents to notable victories.

The ECB described Thorpe as “one of England’s finest-ever batters” and a cherished member of the cricketing community. They expressed deep shock at his passing and highlighted the joy he brought to his teammates and supporters throughout his career.

Thorpe’s coaching career included a brief appointment as head coach of Afghanistan, though he was unable to take up the role due to serious health issues.

Tributes from the cricketing world have celebrated Thorpe’s legacy. Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised him as a “great player and brilliant team-mate,” while current England captain Ben Stokes honored him with a heartfelt post on social media.
