McDonald’s Removes Salads and Plant-Based Items from Its Menu

McDonald’s US President Joe Erlinger recently addressed the removal of salads and the McPlant from menus across the United States, attributing the decision primarily to low customer demand. At the WSJ Global Food Forum, Erlinger explained that despite efforts to offer healthier options like salads and the plant-based McPlant burger, consumer interest did not meet expectations.

Erlinger stated, “If people really want salads from McDonald’s, we will gladly relaunch salads. But what our experience has proven is that’s not what the consumer is looking for from McDonald’s.” He also noted that the McPlant, which was tested in a limited capacity in 2022, failed to gain traction with US consumers. According to Erlinger, “I don’t think the U.S. consumer is coming to McDonald’s looking for the McPlant or other plant-based proteins.”

In contrast to these unsuccessful menu additions, McDonald’s has found considerable success in 2024 with its $5 meal deal. This value-oriented offering includes a choice of a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, small fries, 4-piece Chicken McNuggets, and a small soft drink. The meal deal was introduced to address increasing fast food prices and make dining out more affordable and appealing to customers.

Despite the fluctuations in menu items, McDonald’s continues to excel with its iconic french fries, which remain immensely popular. The company reportedly sells over 9 million pounds of french fries daily, underscoring their status as a favorite among customers.
