This comes after two previous cases of HIV were reported in 2019, also linked to injection-related procedures performed at the same spa.
The New Mexico Department of Health has reopened its investigation into the spa, urging former clients who received injection-related services, including vampire facials and Botox treatments, to undergo testing for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. The department is taking this step as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals who might have been exposed to blood-borne infections during their visits to the spa.
The VIP Spa closed its doors in 2018 after a state inspection revealed unsafe practices that could potentially spread blood-borne infections to clients. The owner of the spa pleaded guilty to five felony counts of practicing medicine without a license in June 2022, further highlighting the unauthorized nature of the procedures performed at the establishment.

A vampire facial, also known as a plasma-rich protein facial, involves the injection of plasma derived from the individual’s own blood into the facial skin using a micro-needling pen. The procedure aims to stimulate collagen production and rejuvenate the skin. However, if proper sanitation measures are not followed, such as the reuse of micro-needling tips or syringes, or the use of another patient’s blood, there is a risk of infections and the transmission of diseases.
The New Mexico Department of Health is urging individuals who have received any injection-related services at the VIP Spa, regardless of their previous test results, to come forward for free and confidential testing. By spreading awareness and encouraging testing, health officials aim to address the potential risks associated with these procedures and ensure the well-being of those who may have been exposed.
This case highlights the importance of proper regulation, licensing, and adherence to safety protocols in the beauty and wellness industry. It serves as a reminder for individuals to seek services from reputable establishments that prioritize client safety and follow industry standards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
