Motorway Corruption concerns have increased after a Senate committee raised questions about toll collection and official postings.
The Senate Standing Committee on Communications discussed several issues within the motorway system. The meeting was chaired by Senator Pervaiz Rashid.
Officials briefed the committee about action taken against officers over corruption concerns. The National Highways and Motorway Police said it follows a zero-tolerance policy.
According to officials, disciplinary action was taken against 178 officers in Sindh. The action was linked to alleged corruption and related misconduct.
Concerns Over Toll Collection
Senator Saifullah Abro raised concerns about toll collection in Sindh. He questioned the decision to outsource toll collection to a private company.
Abro alleged that some individuals were involved in corrupt practices. The committee sought greater clarity about the toll collection arrangements.
The concerns added to the broader discussion about Motorway Corruption. Members wanted authorities to ensure transparency in the system.
The committee also examined the issue of officials serving on deputation. Officials said 331 personnel had already completed their deputation periods.
Abro questioned why some officials continued working after completing their permitted tenure. He said deputation postings should follow the applicable rules.
He pointed out that officials cannot normally remain on deputation for more than five years. The committee sought explanations regarding extended postings.
Retired Official Case
The committee also discussed the case of a retired official. The individual reportedly retired in July 2025 but continued serving.
Officials explained that the matter involved a dispute over his date of birth. They said the individual had obtained a court stay order.
Abro said a High Court inquiry committee had already directed authorities to take action. The matter was therefore discussed during the committee meeting.
Naigaj Dam Cost Increase
The committee also reviewed developments related to the Naigaj Dam project. Senator Abro highlighted a major increase in the project’s estimated cost.
The project was initially estimated to cost Rs. 12 billion. Its estimated cost later increased to Rs. 45 billion.
The estimate was subsequently revised further to Rs. 85 billion. The sharp increase raised additional questions during the committee’s review.
Members called for proper examination of the project’s rising costs. They also stressed the need for transparency in public spending.
The committee directed relevant authorities to address concerns surrounding toll collection and official postings. It also sought action regarding the issues discussed during the meeting.
The discussion highlighted concerns over Motorway Corruption and administrative practices. Authorities were asked to ensure compliance with rules and improve oversight.
