Punjab Government Approves 3,565 New Police Jobs

The Punjab government has approved the recruitment of 3,565 traffic assistants and constables for the provincial police force. The move aims to address the shortage of police personnel across the province.

According to a report by 24News, the recruitment plan was approved during a Punjab cabinet meeting. The meeting was chaired by the Punjab chief minister.

The hiring process is expected to start soon. The approved positions will be filled in two phases. The government will divide the recruitment equally between the two phases.

Under the first phase, 50 percent of the sanctioned positions will be filled. This phase includes the recruitment of 1,782 constables in the General Executive Cadre.

The remaining 50 percent of the positions will be filled later. The second phase is planned for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026-27.

The recruitment comes as the provincial police face a shortage of personnel. Officials said more staff is needed to meet the province’s security requirements.

Police staffing requirements are linked to population levels. Under the Police Rules 1934, one police official is assigned for every 450 people.

The existing shortage has created additional pressure on the provincial police force. The new recruitment is expected to help reduce this staffing gap.

The Punjab government has planned the recruitment to strengthen police operations. It also aims to improve the force’s ability to provide security.

Traffic assistants and police constables perform important duties across the province. Their responsibilities include maintaining public order and supporting traffic management.

The recruitment could also improve the availability of police personnel in areas facing staffing shortages. Additional personnel may help distribute duties more effectively.

The Punjab government has not indicated any changes to the approved recruitment structure. The first phase will focus on filling the sanctioned constable positions.

The second phase will follow during the specified period of fiscal year 2026-27. This phased approach will allow the government to gradually expand the police workforce.

The recruitment is part of efforts to strengthen Punjab’s security infrastructure. It is also expected to support the police force in meeting its growing responsibilities.
