The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is developing a new electronic parking system in Islamabad. The system will cover seven designated locations across the capital.
Under the proposed system, vehicle parking time will be recorded digitally. Parking duration and applicable charges will be monitored through an electronic dashboard.
CDA officials shared details about the project during a Senate Standing Committee on Interior meeting. They said work on the electronic parking system is currently underway.
The digital system is expected to improve parking management in busy areas. It will allow the authority to track how long vehicles remain in designated spaces.
The system will also provide information about parking fees. Officials will be able to monitor charges through the electronic dashboard.
Senator Naseema Ehsan discussed Islamabad’s wider traffic management challenges. She said a system similar to one introduced in Karachi had also started in Islamabad.
She highlighted the difficulties people face while searching for parking spaces. Residents and visitors often struggle to find suitable parking in busy parts of the city.
People from different provinces also regularly visit Islamabad. Senator Ehsan specifically mentioned visitors and residents from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
CDA Director General Enforcement Anum Fatima also briefed the committee. She said the Blue Area parking plaza has been completed.
The parking plaza is expected to help reduce parking pressure in the area. She said parking charges are being collected according to the approved CDA layout plan.
The authority is also moving toward cashless parking transactions. QR codes are being used for payments at parking facilities.
The use of digital payments could make parking transactions easier for motorists. It could also reduce reliance on traditional cash-based collection methods.
However, questions were raised about current parking arrangements. Senator Abid Sher Ali questioned why fees were still being collected on roads.
His question came despite the CDA’s statement about completing the Blue Area parking plaza. He described the two positions as contradictory.
Sher Ali also asked about parking arrangements in newly constructed plazas. He raised concerns about whether these buildings provide enough parking space.
The senator proposed a new requirement for future developments. He suggested that new plazas should not receive a No Objection Certificate without adequate underground parking.
The proposal aims to address parking shortages linked to new commercial developments. It could also encourage developers to provide sufficient parking facilities.
The CDA’s planned electronic system represents a move toward technology-based parking management. Digital tracking could provide better oversight of parking duration and charges.
The project is part of broader efforts to improve traffic management in Islamabad. Further implementation details will depend on the progress of the ongoing project.
