Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch in November 2026, but players hoping to jump into its online multiplayer world on day one may have to wait considerably longer.
Rockstar Games has not yet officially announced GTA 6 Online, leaving fans uncertain about when the multiplayer component of the highly anticipated sequel will become available.
According to speculation cited by Forbes, GTA 6 Online could arrive one or even two years after the main game, potentially pushing its launch into 2027 or 2028. Rockstar has not confirmed such a timeline, meaning the reported delay remains speculation rather than an official release plan.
GTA 6 set for November 2026 release
Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
The game has been in development for years and has already experienced multiple delays as Rockstar continues working on what is expected to be one of the biggest releases in gaming history.
Unlike GTA 5, however, Rockstar has not announced a multiplayer mode alongside the game’s release date.
This means players could initially receive only the single-player experience featuring protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, while Rockstar continues developing the next-generation online experience separately.
GTA 5 Online launched shortly after the game
The potential delay would represent a major change from Rockstar’s approach to GTA 5.
Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on September 17, 2013, while GTA Online followed only about two weeks later on October 1, 2013.
GTA Online subsequently became one of the most successful and long-running multiplayer experiences in gaming, receiving years of updates, new content and online features.
Rockstar could therefore take a very different approach with GTA 6, particularly because the company has already spent considerable time developing the main game.
Why GTA 6 Online could take longer
One possible reason for a delayed multiplayer launch is the enormous scale of GTA Online itself.
The existing online mode has remained active for more than a decade and continues to generate substantial revenue for Rockstar through regular content updates and in-game purchases.
Rather than immediately replacing that ecosystem, Rockstar may have little financial pressure to rush a new multiplayer platform.
A separate launch could also give the company additional time to build GTA 6 Online into a large-scale service capable of supporting players for many years.
The sequel’s online world is expected to take advantage of newer hardware and technology, potentially allowing Rockstar to introduce more ambitious gameplay systems and features.
Rockstar has not confirmed the delay
Despite the growing discussion among GTA fans, Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed that GTA 6 Online will be delayed by one or two years.
The speculation is largely based on Rockstar’s lack of information about the multiplayer mode and the company’s continued focus on completing GTA 6.
There is also no confirmed release date or official launch window for GTA 6 Online at this stage.
As a result, players should treat reports of a 2027 or 2028 release as speculation until Rockstar provides more information.
Fans may have to wait
For fans, the immediate focus remains the November 2026 release of GTA 6.
The game is expected to introduce a large open-world setting in the fictional state of Leonida, with Lucia and Jason at the centre of the story.
If Rockstar follows a delayed multiplayer strategy, players could spend a significant amount of time exploring the single-player campaign before GTA 6 Online eventually arrives.
Such an approach would also allow Rockstar to continue supporting GTA Online while gradually preparing its successor.
For now, the company has given fans no official indication of when GTA 6 Online will launch. Until an announcement is made, expectations of a one- or two-year wait remain unconfirmed.
