The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a weather alert for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following a forecast of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from August 17 to 21.
According to the alert, widespread severe weather is expected across northern, central and southern districts of the province. Several areas could experience heavy downpours during the five-day period.
Chitral, Dir, Swat, Buner, Shangla, Malakand and Bajaur are among the northern districts expected to receive rain and thunderstorms. Kohistan, Kolai Palas, Battagram, Torghar, Mansehra and Abbottabad are also included in the forecast.
Haripur, Mardan, Swabi, Khyber, Mohmand, Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera could also experience severe weather. Rain and thunderstorms are expected in Kohat, Kurram, Hangu and Orakzai as well.
Heavy rainfall is particularly expected in several southern districts on August 20 and 21. These areas include Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan and Tank.
North Waziristan and South Waziristan are also expected to receive heavy rainfall during the final two days of the forecast period. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
In response to the weather warning, Rescue 1122 Director General Shah Fahad urged citizens to take strict safety precautions. He advised people to avoid unnecessary movement during severe weather.
Citizens have also been advised against swimming in rivers, streams and other waterways. Rising water levels and strong currents could create dangerous conditions following heavy rainfall.
The public has also been urged to avoid hiking and trekking during the rainy period. Authorities warned that heavy rainfall could increase the risk of landslides in mountainous areas.
Residents have been advised to stay away from power poles and signboards during thunderstorms. People should also avoid steep slopes and unfinished structures that could become dangerous during strong winds.
Women have been particularly advised to avoid crossing flooded areas and bridges during heavy rainfall. Sudden increases in water levels can make crossings extremely dangerous.
The PDMA has urged the public to follow official weather updates and safety instructions. Local administrations and emergency services are also expected to remain prepared for possible weather-related incidents.
The latest warning comes as strong monsoon activity is affecting several parts of Pakistan. Heavy rainfall could also cause localized flooding and disrupt travel in vulnerable areas.
Residents in low-lying and mountainous locations should take extra precautions during the forecast period. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel whenever heavy rain or thunderstorms are occurring.
