Pakistan Football is set to achieve another historic milestone as the men’s national team prepares to participate in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup. The tournament will mark the team’s first appearance in a FIFA-organized event.
The development comes after the Pakistan women’s national team participated in the FIFA Series earlier this year. Now, the men’s team will represent the country at the FIFA ASEAN Cup, which is scheduled to take place in September.
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) announced that the national team is among 14 teams selected for the competition. Eight teams will participate in the tournament hosted by Indonesia, including Pakistan, Malaysia, India, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani welcomed the opportunity and thanked FIFA President Gianni Infantino for providing Pakistan with the chance to compete in another FIFA event. He said the participation reflects the federation’s goal of achieving new milestones.
Gilani said the FIFA ASEAN Cup will provide the national team with valuable international experience. The tournament will allow Pakistani players to compete against strong teams from Southeast Asia during the extended international window in September and October.
He added that providing regular competitive opportunities is a key part of improving the national team’s performance. According to him, the event represents progress for Pakistan Football and its efforts to compete at a higher level.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the FIFA ASEAN Cup was created to give national teams meaningful matches under the Men’s International Match Calendar. He explained that the tournament will strengthen football connections across Southeast Asia and provide exciting competition for fans.
The competition will feature two levels. The main FIFA ASEAN Cup will include teams such as Pakistan, Malaysia, India, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The second-tier FIFA ASEAN Challenge Cup will feature other regional teams.
Teams will be divided into groups according to the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking. Each group will follow a single-round-robin format, with teams competing for positions in the standings.
The group winners will advance to the final matches of their respective competitions. The runners-up will play third-place matches.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup provides an important platform for Pakistan Football to gain international exposure. The tournament will allow players to test themselves against competitive opponents and build confidence on the global stage.
Syed Mohsen Gilani said Pakistan is aiming for bigger achievements in international football. He added that the country’s football journey is moving toward more competitive events and greater recognition.
