Aaqib Javed Says Pakistan Needs Top Ranking for World Cup Win

Aaqib Javed, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Director of High-Performance, has shared concerns about Pakistan’s chances of winning the 2027 ODI World Cup. He said the team must improve its international ranking before aiming for major success.

Speaking about Pakistan’s current position, Aaqib Javed said it would be unrealistic to expect World Cup victory while the team is not among the world’s top-ranked sides. He believes Pakistan must first establish itself among the top four ODI teams.

He said many people expect Pakistan to win every International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. However, he explained that consistent performances and stronger rankings are necessary to achieve that goal.

According to Aaqib, Pakistan needs to focus on improving its ODI position before the 2027 World Cup. He said teams must perform well in bilateral series because these matches directly impact international rankings.

Pakistan is currently ranked fifth in the ICC ODI rankings with a rating of 100. However, rankings can change depending on future performances and results in upcoming series.

Aaqib Javed previously highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong ODI ranking. He warned that poor performances could create difficulties in securing direct qualification for major tournaments.

He referred to examples from previous World Cups, including Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Both teams failed to qualify directly for the 2023 ODI World Cup and had to compete in the qualifying tournament.

Aaqib said Pakistan’s first priority should be staying among the leading ODI teams. He believes this will help the team avoid qualification risks and allow better preparation for the global event.

The former cricketer added that once Pakistan secures a strong position, the team can focus more on preparing for tournament conditions. The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

He emphasized that a balanced approach is needed for long-term success. Improving consistency, winning important series, and developing players will be key factors for Pakistan’s future performance.

However, reports suggest that Pakistan’s qualification chances for the 2027 ODI World Cup are already strong due to updated qualification rules. This means the team is unlikely to face the same challenges experienced by some teams in the previous tournament.
