Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday has made a powerful start at the box office even before its release, generating an impressive $16.5 million in first-day advance ticket sales. The milestone marks one of the strongest pre-sale debuts ever for a Hollywood blockbuster and signals massive anticipation ahead of the film’s December premiere.
Disney officially launched ticket sales alongside the release of the movie’s first trailer, giving fans a glimpse of an epic battle featuring the Avengers, the X-Men, and the iconic villain Doctor Doom. The trailer quickly sparked excitement across social media, contributing to the film’s record-breaking advance bookings.
The impressive ticket sales came despite advance bookings initially being limited to premium-format screenings at around 1,000 theaters across North America. Industry observers say demand was so high that many premium showings scheduled for December 17 and 18 sold out within hours.
With the film set to open during the weekend of December 18, Disney plans a much wider release in more than 4,000 theaters across the United States and Canada. Cinema chains have already begun adding extra screenings during the Christmas holiday period to meet overwhelming demand.
The early response suggests Avengers: Doomsday could become one of the year’s biggest theatrical releases. Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, especially after the studio teased a crossover featuring the Avengers, X-Men, and Doctor Doom.
One of the biggest surprises surrounding the release is that Avengers: Doomsday will not receive an IMAX release. Instead, those premium large-format screens have been reserved exclusively for Dune: Part Three, which secured a three-week IMAX window after director Denis Villeneuve filmed the movie using IMAX cameras.
To compensate for the absence of IMAX screenings, Disney is introducing a new certification program called Infinity Vision. Rather than being a new projection format, the initiative ensures participating cinemas meet the studio’s technical standards for picture quality, sound, and overall presentation.
Industry analysts believe the record-breaking advance sales position Avengers: Doomsday among the strongest box office contenders of the year. While strong pre-sales often indicate high audience interest, experts note they do not always guarantee record-breaking opening weekend earnings.
Nevertheless, the combination of massive fan anticipation, an all-star Marvel lineup, and holiday release timing has fueled expectations that Avengers: Doomsday could become one of Marvel Studios’ biggest commercial successes in recent years.
As the countdown to December continues, exhibitors are preparing for heavy demand, with additional premium-format showtimes already being added to accommodate moviegoers eager to witness Marvel’s next blockbuster on the big screen.
