India overtakes Australia to become No. 1 test team

Australia’s 15-month reign atop the Men’s Test Rankings comes to an end, with India passing the Aussies ahead of next month’s ICC World Test Championship Final.

The match between India and Australia in Test cricket has quickly become one of the most exciting rivalries in recent history, and the rankings reversal perfectly sets up the World Test Championship Final, with the two sides set to write yet another chapter at The Oval on 7 June.

Prior to the annual rankings update, Australia led with 122 points, with India trailing by three (119). The annual rankings take into account all series completed since May 2020, with series completed before May 2022 weighted 50% and all subsequent series weighted 100%.

As a result, Australia’s home series victories over Pakistan (2-0) and New Zealand (3-0) in 2019/20 are no longer considered, and their 4-0 win over England in 2021/22 has been halved in weighting. As a result, Australia’s rating fell from 121 to 116.

India’s 2-0 loss to New Zealand in 2019/20 was no longer considered for the rankings, giving them a two-point boost from 119 to 121.

Under Pat Cummins’ first series as captain, Australia soared to the top of the Test rankings, defeating England 4-0 in the home Ashes in January 2022. A month ago, India was ranked first before falling to second place after a 2-0 loss to South Africa.

England’s turnaround in form under captain Ben Stokes has helped them cut the gap to second place from 13 to two points. The weightage of their 4-0 Ashes defeat and 1-0 series loss away to West Indies has also been reduced. The rest of the rankings remain unchanged.
